Power Usage Effectiveness

(PUE)
 
Power usage effectiveness (PUE) is a metric developed by The Green Grid that measures datacenter efficiency
It's a ratio of the total power consumed by the all building (including lighting, heating, restaurant...) to the energy delivered to the servers.
The ideal PUE is 1.0, meaning 100% of data center energy powers the IT equipment. Best practice PUE for the IT sector is 1.5

DC3 datacenter use indirect freecooling using heat exchangers between dry-coolers dans chilled water. This system permit to minimize mecanical cooling, between 18°C-8°C outside temperature in mix mode (freecooling + mecanical cooling) and total freecooling under 8°C.
The freecooling system impact our PUE between 0.08 and 0.25 depending of outside temperature and IT power consuption. Freecooling net capacity is calculated using flowmeter and differential temperature sensors (Accuracy 2.5%)

Humidity in our datacenter is controlled through an evaporative system to maintain 40% to 85% non condensing.
When outside humidity is low, our cooling system is consuming electricity and water to add humidity which also increases PUE

Temperature

Servers need to be kept between 20°C and 28°C in order to function properly.
Cooling performances and most of our PUE value depend directly on outside temperature.
When outside temperature is below 9°C, the datacenter is in total indirect freecooling mode, no electricity is used in mechanical cooling compressors.
Between 18°C and 8°C, our datacenter is working in 'mix' mode, with indirect freecooling and mechanical cooling at the same time, depending on outside temperature and IT consumption.

This metric shows the total IT power consumption measured on rack side by high precision meters.
The IT consumption is more and more variable during the day due to customer massive variable usage (due to cloud and virtualization) and datacenter filling.
For this reason, our cooling plant need an new generation precision algorithms and controllers in order to always feet to the IT consumption with no delay

We are sharing dashboards that show real-time PUE (power usage effectiveness) and WUE (water usage effectiveness) at our datacenter DC3 in Paris France.
As we use only dry cooling systems and closed air circuit cooling, our WUE (Water Usage Effectiveness) is 0 as we are not using any water evaporative in our cooling process.
Theses dry-coolers are also used for the indirect freecooling system, through an high efficiency water heat exchangers between theses dry-coolers and IT chilled water.

We work hard to maintain extremely efficient datacenters, and we use data including PUE to track the performance of this facility.
